I'm really interested in the why when talking about cattle behaviour. Why do they paw at the ground and kick dirt up around them? Why do they have crazy biffo moments with eachother? why do they stand head to backside next to eachother? Do they really see things at 10 times the size of what they are?
Do you know of a good book for cattle behaviour? What strange things do your cattle do and what are your theories on why?

Hi Squarepeg When we asked the same question, we were directed to anything and everything from Dr Temple Grandin and we haven’t looked back since. While we have read information from others, her writings seem to fit in with our preferred management practices. There are some points we don’t agree with but have taken into consideration. Heres one link but I have quite a few which can be found when searching Aattle-behaviour-small-farms

Thanks Donna,
Are you going to watch the movie about her? I listen to a podcast which mentioned it. I remember reading something about her when researching how I should design cattle yards, but more recently have listened to a few of her you tube videos and find her fascinating. Do you have her books?

Hi squarepeg, she is an amazing lady and even more amazing to get where she is today. People know her as an authority on cattle behaviour and cattle yard and abattoir design but not many people know that she also recognised as an authority in autism. She herself is a high functioning autistic person, diagnosed later in life. She has a unique ability to be able to describe how she thinks, ( unlike other autistic people)which has given much light into how the autistic brain functions, "thinking in pictures". She has written books on autism and also gives seminars, workshops etc. My sister specialises in autism and early intervention and has been to some of her seminars, lectures and workshops. She says that they are really interesting and very different to anything else. She displays her autism in the way she does presentations, and apparently some are quite "irrational" for a seminar LOL. Some of the latest research that I have read of hers is on how to make halal slaughtering more humane, she makes the slaughter process so cut and dried and she is totally unemotional about it all, I suppose that is her autism at work. The ABC has aired one of her presentations, would have been a while ago now, maybe last year or the year before. It was definitely worth watching.

Hi Louise, Yes the "trailer" for the movie about her obviously includes the autism, and how much her mother worked to have her included. I guess that's what it took for someone who is able to think outside the square (although they would consider it very normal). Will add her books to my Christmas list I think.

Stress Spreads: What's Pee Got To Do With It? You may have noticed that whn a few animals get stressed, others do too, or that a normally calm group of animals just isn’t the same when you add a Nervous Nelly. Here’s what could be going on. Read more about this at pasture.comHow are your Dexters and has anyone noticed something similar?

Haven't noticed it in my cows, but I know when my sheep get agitated they seem to clear out their bowels and have a wee. I always put it down to they could run faster if they'd gotten rid of any excess "weight" !! LOL
