We are a young family, with three children under 5 and two full time jobs (although hurrah for maternity leave!). I love my dexters, but I do not think I give them all the attention I want to give them, and that they deserve because of my other commitments. It makes me wonder, are Dexters more for retirees with a hobby farm or a side thing for "real" farmers? I think DCAI want to (and maybe should?) market it to the younger family bracket, I'm just not sure that's where the sales are. I feel like in 10-12 years when my children are older and can participate more, that's when we'll come into the fore, but right now I don't have the time (or funds) to halter train/ show/ milk my girls (and boy), as much as I would dearly love to. It's one of my favourite things to do, walk amongst our Dexters, to talk Dexters, to be on here writing about Dexters! but if I try and halter train or prepare for shows (not that we have the infrastructure to *get* them to a show!, or time off work!?) I know my children would grow bored within 20 minutes. Maybe I should focus on just one girl and start with a bucket and a brush and let the kids participate. I know they love being licked by our calves - I think one calf has a crush on my 2.5yr old son!
How about you? Do you have a young family? Are Dexters your hobby? How long does it take to halter train a heifer?!
