Hi all, Yesterday I put in a cow nose ring!! My first and the heifers first!! Im thinking easy peasy!! Pfft you think!! I dipped it in molasses and approached little Jess!! Who by the way is in season. Well she wasnt having a bar of it and I was all fingers and thumbs!! I came over the top and she put her head down and as she is a shortie i struggled and she struggled!! Eventually I left it, her tied up and waited for O/H to come home and help!! Very deflated with my effort with what I thought would be an a simple job was far from it!! Anyway when the boss got home we both approached the task at hand, got it in fairly quickly but still a struggle. Anyone got any tips to make this easy job easier!! Lol

Hi Squirt, some types are easier than others to get in. I'm no expert, but what I do is because I am right handed I like to go from their right side, though once they get used to it I use either side. I tie them up short so they can't throw their head around, and very calmly and quickly come from low and the side, slip in the far side first, then the closest side as you close it. Then you wait for the tanty to happen. They carry on a bit till they learn to get used to it. It is easier if it is clean and dry, otherwise they get a bit slippery. It would have been a sticky mess with the molasses. LOL After I take them out, I like to wash them with a bit of soap and water, and I spray some oil on them, just that cooking oil in a can, to keep them lubricated and stops them corroding. Are you going to show her? Maybe someone else will pop in with some other ways that they do it. regards Louise

Yeah Louise, I must admit the molasses was a pain! lol. Ill try tying her up shorter, Ive always been a bit awkward and not real quick Haha, Ive noticed too since cleaning it and oiling it the mechanism is smoother in using and easier. Maybe if I had done that first and practiced better, I wouldnt have gone in all guns blazing!! I went in gently but pussy footed around perhaps!! lol

Yeah, making sure it moves easily and smoothly does help. Don't pussy foot, be firm and decisive, but calm about it all. Remember, you are in control. Yeah, sure says I, as I get knocked flying. LOL I have seen a bad accident with someone trying to attach a lead to a nose ring in a bull at a show. Instead of doing it properly, they took the easy way, reached through the metal rails from the front, the bull threw his head up smashing the ladies arm against the rails. So whichever way you do it, keep safety in mind. regards Louise
