Future federal dietary guidelines on healthy eating choices could soon incorporate guidance on the "right" food choices for the environment--including reducing red meat consumption. Issued every five years under guidance from the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, the federal government uses the guidelines to set standards for school lunches, while food companies use them to make claims about their products. AWA has long argued that our daily food choices can have a big impact on the environment. While we support the principle of including sustainability as a wider dietary goal, however, we are concerned the guidelines on meat will fail to differentiate between pasture-based and grain-fed production. AWA is challenging this broad-brush definition wherever it arises: We know pasture-raised protein is not only healthier, but has a far better environmental profile than intensively-raised protein products.
